What is RotaBolt?

How does it work?
Achieving and maintaining the correct clamping force, or bolt tension, is essential in assuring bolted joint integrity. 85% – 90% of all bolted joint failures are caused by insufficient bolt tension.

The RotaBolt-TD system continuously monitors and reports in-service bolt tension by SMS or email. RotaBolt-TD is supported with state of the art instrumentation and data automation, and can be deployed with a full data management and reporting package. Each bolt in the RotaBolt-TD system contains micro instrumentation and a wireless transmitter. It periodically reads bolt tension, critical to the integrity of the joint, and then wirelessly transfers the information to a local transceiver which collects the data from any number of bolts and then transmits the report via the internet, or GSM network, to a secure server. Each bolt contains a coin-cell battery which ensures 5 years continuous unattended operation. The system has been developed by James Walker RotaBolt, world leaders in bolted joint technology, and Transmission Dynamics who design and manufacture wireless telemetry and data acquisition systems for recovering in-service load information from the most demanding of environments.

A bolt is converted with a RotaBolt indicator and cap. As the load indicator fastener is stretched, the cap locks at the specified tension value.
Using the same air-gap technology, Vision has a specially developed indicator which appears as an yellow line across the head of the fastener.
